Distance Learning
Introduction and Overview

The information on this page is provided for those students taking this course in a Distance Learning (DL) mode.

Internet Access

To be successful in this course you must have easy access to the Internet. All course materials, except for the textbooks, are available on this web site. It is best that your Internet access be from your home, so that you can interact with the course materials frequently ... and at times convenient to your lifestyle. You may also want to access the Internet from The University of Toledo campus (if you live near UT) or from one of the community and/or technical colleges with whom we are partnering for the CSET Degree Completion program.

Technology

If you are accessing these course materials over a modem, it is recommended that you switch to broadband access.

If you wish to communicate with the instructor and/or other students via

Communication

The importance of frequent and meaningful communication with the instructor cannot be over emphasized. Since you will not be able to interact with the instructor in a classroom setting, and cannot take advantage of the instructor's office hours in the usual manner, you will need to communicate in other modes.

Email. The easiest way to communicate with your instructor is by email. Make it a point to send an email message to your instructor at least once per week, detailing your progress and expressing any concerns that you might have.

Class Discussion Page. Post questions to the class discussion page. Look there first for answers that may already have been posted by other students and/or the instructor. If you know the answer to a question that you find on the class discussion page, post it!

Local Study Groups. It is strongly recommended that you identify other students in your area who are also taking this course and form a local study group. Your study group should meet at least once per week to "compare notes" and help each other with the course assignments. The importance of a local study group cannot be over emphasized! If necessary, ask your instructor to help you organize a local study group.

Chat. Periodic chat sessions will be held by the instructor. These will be scheduled and announced in advance so that you have every opportunity to participate. These sessions will offer you the chance to interact with other students in the course.

Telephone. You may reach your instructor by telephone at 419-530-3377. Feel free to call at any time during the day or evening. If you reach my voice mail or the department secretary, please leave a message.

FAX. If you want to submit an assingment or other communication via FAX, the number is 419-530-3068.

Readings, Assignments & Progress

The web pages associated with this course are not the only materials which present the content of this course. The topics listed on the "syllabus" page are from the textbook used in this course. It is important that you read through these assignments and work the assigned problems. If you have difficulty, please contact your instructor for assistance and/or post your questions about the assignment on the class discussion page.

The PowerPoint presentations which are linked from the syllabus page are not intended to be stand-alone resources. Rather, they provide you with an indication of what I believe to be the most important points in a chapter. Consider the PowerPoint presentations as an outline of the chapter ... and use it as a guide for your reading and study of the chapter.

Make it a point to achieve steady progress through the course. The course outline is provided as a guide for you to follow. If you fall behind, discuss with your instructor ways in which you might "catch up" and avoid problems at the end of the term.

Personal

You must be self-motivated to be successful in a DL course. I will make every effort to communicate with you on a regular basis, and to encourage you to focus on the course. However, in the final analysis, it is up to you to make certain that you work through the course and keep on schedule.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any difficulty in the course.
