Program Description

The program in Computer Science and Engineering Technology (CSET) includes hardware and software aspects of both computer design and computer applications. Computer design emphasizes the structure of computers and requires expertise in computational applications, digital design, microcomputer systems and computer architectures. Computer applications emphasize the use of computer software in engineering technology and require both low-level and high-level programming techniques, the use of mathematical algorithms, and a general knowledge of computer operating systems. The CSET program provides students with an in-depth understanding of computer hardware and software at the machine and system level.

At the lower-division level, the CSET program provides a solid foundation in the principles of electronics, with an emphasis on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of computer systems, networks, and associated equipment. Along with a broad, general electronics background, students are given comprehensive information and training in computer system structure, peripheral device operation, installation procedures and troubleshooting practices through an extensive, hands-on oriented curriculum. CSET students who seek employment after completing lower-division coursework may be considered engineering technicians and are qualified for positions in product support, design engineering support, and technical support positions. Typical job titles for associate degree graduates include: Computer Systems Specialist, Computer Maintenance Technician, Field Service Representative, Installation Technician, Field Engineer, Systems Integrator and Applications Specialist.

Students who complete the baccalaureate degree in this program will learn how to assist in the planning, construction, troubleshooting, and management of both the hardware and software elements of sophisticated data networks. This unique curriculum is designed with an emphasis on computer data communications using current telecommunications technology. The networking courses focus on subjects such as digital communications, local and wide area networks, regional and global networks, and network planning and management. The programming courses focus on engineering technology applications. Students work in state-of-the-art computing laboratories to complete their assignments. Graduates of the CSET programs are considered engineering technologists and are valuable additions to high-tech corporations throughout the country who are developing, maintaining and marketing computer systems. Baccalaureate graduates are typically employed as Network Technologists, Telecommunications Specialists, Network Support Specialists, and LAN Administrators.
