CSET 4650:

Field Programmable Logic Devices

Welcome to the CSET 4650 web site. Here, you will find links to everything you need to support your studies as you proceed through this course.

In this course, you will learn learn about Field Programmable Logic Devices. You will be introduced to different types of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The course will focus on Xilinx XC 4000 and Virtex FPGAs.

Topics covered in this course include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • General Architecture of FPGAs.
  • Xilinx XC 4000 and Virtex FPGAs
  • Details of Configurable Logic Blocks and Interconnects
  • Schematic Entry of Digital Logic Design
  • Design Entry using VHDL and ABEL
  • Functional Simulation and Implementation of Logic Design
  • Logic Hierarchical Design
  • Downloading the design (bitstreams) onto FPGA board

This course is a required course for CSET students.

There are a number of lab exercises associated with this course. To perform the labs, you need an IBM compatible PC and Xilinx Foundation Series2.1 software. You will also need to purchase a Xilinx FPGA board.

Before taking this course, make sure you have successfully completed 'Digital Systems Design' (EET 3350). Knowledge of advanced digital circuits is required for understanding the whys and hows of the FPGA and the Foundation Series2.1 software.
