EET 3150 UNIX, C and the Internet

This course is primarily concerned with object-oriented programming using C++ for interactive applications on the World Wide Web. Because of the focus on Web applications, it also includes three other major topics: the Internet, World Wide Web, and the UNIX operating system.

Classroom discussions and Web page materials about the Internet include an overview of the Internet, its history, organization, communications protocols and a number of technical details related to its implementation.

Materials related to the Web include its history, basic organizational concepts, protocols, client-server implementations, the use of hypermedia, search engines, and search strategies.

Just enough information about the UNIX operating system is covered to allow students to create, compile, and run C++ programs on a UNIX-based Web server. Programming assignments center on C++ programs that are written for the Web's Common Gateway Interface (CGI). These programs allow students to create dynamic and interactive Web sites.

Although HTML coding is not covered in this course, students will be provided with a sufficient number of HTML examples and other resources to allow the creation of a simple personal Web page.
